In 2014, ForestWatch successfully stopped three fracking operations in the Sespe Oil Field. Local and state officials had approved the fracking without any public hearing or environmental review. In response to our concerns, the officials cancelled the permits. It was the first time in California that a fracking operation was halted due to public pressure.
ForestWatch discovered a fracking operation taking place on national forest land in 2013 and was the only public organization able to gain access to document the controversial activity over several days. Shortly thereafter, ForestWatch released a report showing that an oil company had recently fracked thirteen wells in the Sespe Oil Field. Under ForestWatch’s watchful eye, fracking has not occurred since then. We’ve kept the Sespe frack-free.
