The interactive map below provides an overlay of the U.S. Forest Service’s current Wildfire Risk Reduction Project along with a reduced footprint “Community Alternative” currently being developed by Los Padres ForestWatch and other partners.
This alternative provides robust wildfire mitigation and community protection opportunities while significantly reducing the project footprint and its ecological impacts. The Community Alternative is being developed using the following criteria:
- Prioritizes strategic proximity to communities
- Leverages existing fuel treatments including areas regularly impacted by fire suppression activities
- Eliminates areas where implementation is infeasible
- Minimizes ecological impacts by reducing fuel treatment widths to realistic, feasible, and effective distances
- Reduces impacts to sensitive ecological areas (i.e. special interest areas, riparian corridors, critical habitat)
- Eliminates the portion of the project area that burned in the 2024 Lake Fire (on and around Figueroa Mountain)
